Creating ways to be together and reasons for us to find each other
10 Mistakes That Will Cause an Editor to Reject Your Short Story -- and 5 Tips for Success!
Join us for this special two-hour seminar led by Vita Poetica Co-Editor John Morris. We’ll take a look at the most common errors that apprentice fiction writers tend to make, using real-life (anonymous!) examples. Then we’ll turn to practical tips that will help your short story stand out in the crowd. This is an interactive class, and all short-story writers, whether new or experienced, are invited to join the discussion. We’ll also leave time for your questions at the end.
Salon on "Breaking" Theme
Join us for a virtual salon on our next Readers Respond theme of “Breaking.” We'll start with a short guided meditation, then discuss our theme and have some quiet writing time. After that, there will be a chance to chat and share your writing if you're interested.
An Experiment in Natural Dyeing
Come on an adventure with fiber artist Ellie Benedict to discover living color!
In this workshop, you can expect a short introduction to the craft of natural dyeing and then we’ll set up solar dye projects together and discuss God’s participation in this collaborative art form! Take home your jar and leave it outside in the sun to watch the color slowly appear over the next 3-14 days. The final piece may fade or change color over time, but there is never-ending worth in your work. Just like how the dye came from a living thing, the piece of art you created lives on!
Book Discussion: Franzen's Crossroads
Crossroads is a novel about the soulful struggles of the Hildebrandt family in 1971 America. Illuminations is a novel of the life of Hildegard von Bingen, 12th-century Christian abbess, theologian, mystic, and composer. Both books weave strong characters into a complex tapestry of morality and mores, early feminism, political landscapes, and personal choices. Join us for a lively forum that will explore these stories individually and in dialogue with one another. Come for one or both discussions!
The Call to Justice in Poetry
In this gathering, held on Zoom, we will read poems on the themes of justice and injustice, and then discuss how they move us. Do we find a deeper understanding of justice? A deeper appreciation for the power of poetry? Are we encouraged to act, as people of faith?

Word Becoming Flesh: A Dramatic Reading Workshop
Professional actor and voice coach Acacia Danielson takes you inside the (virtual) actor’s studio to learn how to bring the words on a page to life. Every act of speech is an act of incarnation, the enfleshing of a thought, image, or idea into the sensible realities of sound, space, and gesture. Writing helps us preserve language and thought, but it can also deaden the impact of the spoken word. Each act of performance is a “resurrection” of language confined to a page, a rediscovery of its living and active quality. Come explore the nature of language and practice simple techniques to make reading poetry, prose, drama, and Scripture aloud a more invigorating act of communication.
