The Call to Justice in Poetry

In this gathering, held on Zoom, we will read poems on the themes of justice and injustice, and then discuss how they move us. Do we find a deeper understanding of justice? A deeper appreciation for the power of poetry? Are we encouraged to act, as people of faith?

The poems will be drawn from a wide variety of sources and styles, and sent to participants in advance along with some corresponding readings from the Old or New Testament, the Koran, or a secular spiritually oriented text, to provide a possible point of personal reflection.

We’ll start with one poem and its spiritually relevant text as a pairing, followed by conversation that invites us to explore our thoughts about how it moves us. We’ll encourage participants to share how they relate personally to the poem’s themes. We’ll hope to explore as many poems as time permits, without crimping the time allotted for each discussion. And at the conclusion of the gathering, we’ll encourage participants to share any poems they may have written themselves on the themes of justice and injustice.

This event is free, but registration is required. A Zoom link will be sent to participants prior to the event. Register below or through Eventbrite here.
