Open Call for Submissions to 2020 Virtual Advent Calendar
Vita Poetica announces an open call from Oct. 12 through Nov. 20, 2020, for submissions to its 2020 virtual Advent Calendar, Incarnation. This series aims to bring together works that enliven our quarterly theme, Incarnation, and invite experiential meaning to its audience. Selected works will be presented to the community throughout the four weeks of Advent in a daily email as well as on our website, www.vitapoetica.org. Please feel free to share this call with any who may be interested.
Theme: Vita Poetica’s fourth quarter theme explores Incarnation. Entrants are encouraged to consider this theme and submit content that would spark a few beautiful daily moments for the observer during this Advent season. We encourage you to read the full prompt, which presents the idea that “Giving symbols and metaphors palpable form is a way to invoke wonder over their true nature.” Julie goes on to say, “It seems making a symbol or a metaphor come to life is not something grownups often feel the need to do. Perhaps because we have the intellectual capacity to understand a symbol at its representational level, we’re less inclined to also seek out experiential knowledge of the matter. But… [we] have need for experiential knowledge as well.”
Details: The call for entry welcomes all media, including but not limited to poetry, painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, prayers, liturgy, narrative prompt, prose, video, performance and digital media. Content should be digestible in approx. 5 minutes or less. Submissions should be able to easily format into a standard email template and require little to no editing. They should include any necessary contextual notes as well as artist details and credit info to be included when shown.
How to Submit: All entries must be submitted electronically to vitapoeticadc@gmail.com by 11:59pm EST on November 20, 2020. Early submission welcome and appreciated. Please include "Advent Calendar Submission" in the subject line of your entry. You will be notified by November 25 if your work has been accepted.
About Us: Vita Poetica connects and supports artists of faith in the DC area and beyond through gatherings, prompts and creative content. We believe the creative process is a spiritual journey: that art is prayer and worship and that both creative and spiritual practices create opportunities to encounter mystery and to deepen our awareness. We invite the spiritually inclined to explore their faith in new ways, and the creatively inclined to grapple with the essential questions and universal themes at the core of religious faith. We aim to be accessible to creatives and contemplatives alike, and in so doing, we hope to exist as a community where these two inclinations meet. Learn more about us here.
We look forward to your contributions as we seek to experience Advent together. May your creative contributions festoon the imaginations of your fellow human and bring us closer to God.
